Castles in the Countryside

Today we took a bus tour into the Bavarian countryside.  It was ridiculously picturesque.

We visited two of Ludwig II's castles.  Our first stop was Linderhof, a miniature version of Versailles.  Ludwig admired the Sun King so much he built his own version of his palace.

Dad found a not-so-friendly swan.  Right after I took its picture it bit me and then chased Allie and me down the path.  We were really close to the lake that inspired "Swan Lake", so we didn't really mind.

Our next stop was a little village famous for its passion plays (religious theatricals).  During the plague the villagers asked to be spared and promised that if they survived they would perform a passion play every ten years forever, and they are still doing it.  It was also a wonderful place to get real Bavarian cuckoo clocks.

Then we went to the day's nightlight; Neuschwanstein Castle, Mad King Ludwig's unfinished masterpiece and the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle.  It was gorgeous!  The outside was as stunning as we imagined, and the inside looked like the world's classiest McMenamin's, with beautiful painting in medieval motifs on the walls.

We rode a horse-drawn carriage to get there, and also so another nearby castle on the way.

After we returned to town we went to the world's largest Feuerzangen Bowle which translates to Fire Tongs Bowl.  It is a giant flaming copper cauldron full of gluhwein with rum in it.  Supposedly it holds nine thousand liters of wine, about as much as our winery produces in an entire year.
